Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of the periodontium—the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. 

These tissues include the gums, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. The main goal of periodontology is to prevent and treat periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if not properly managed.
